At Orthopaedic Associates, we offer the most advanced bone density test available to detect decreases in bone mass associated with osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis, otherwise known as the “brittle bone disease,” causes a weakening of the bones that can ultimately result in fractures. Often the result of a fall or accident during household duties, fractures commonly occur in the hips, spine, wrists, arms, and legs.
The most commonly known risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Aging females
- Low sex hormones (most common during menopause)
- Lower body weight
- Use of some medications
Prevention and treatment options for osteoporosis include increasing your intake of vitamin D and calcium, maintaining a regular exercise program, and if needed, using osteoporosis medications.
A bone density scan, or DEXA, is the only way to accurately diagnose osteoporosis. Once the severity of osteoporosis is determined, the development of a plan to help prevent the onset or the progression of the disease is important.
